Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbirdis unquestionably an American classic. This stage adaptation continues to compel and delight audiences worldwide with
its warmth, wit, and wisdom. The story of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is simple, yet it speaks deeply and eloquently of human nature and human
values. The story is set in a sleepy Southern town of the 1930s, as Atticus
Finch, an attorney and the widowed father of two young children, stands against
his fellow townspeople by defending a young black man falsely accused of raping
a white woman. Through every step and with every word, Atticus instills in his children the
traditional moral values of honesty, courage, integrity, respect for others,
and above all, responsibility for one’s actions. Without fanfare or bravado, Atticus Finch achieves the status of a
true American hero.

Part Riverdance, part Stomp! And while it has components of both of these
international smash hits (fiddling and dancing from the former, percussion and
dancing from the latter) Drum! manages to establish its own identity as a
performance piece born of rich cultural traditions, driven by youthful energy,
and sustained by audiences that can't seem to get enough of this sort of thing.

Drum! is performed at the quick pace this type of show requires. The tone
throughout is decidedly upbeat, if you'll pardon the expression, and while
there are a few sombre and reflective moments, the mood is mostly festive and
celebratory.
The operative word here is "variety," and it applies to everything from
instruments to costumes to the material itself, where the range extends from
Aboriginal powwow chanting, to Highland dancing, to Acadian fiddling, to Negro
spirituals.

Steven Walker is an emerging artist and adjunct professor of painting at VCU and
Virginia State University. His paintings are primarily landscapes around
Virginia, with an emphasis on the sky, light, storms and atmosphere. The
moodiness is an impressionistic interpretation of the world around him and a
reflection of a deep appreciation of the land in a way that connects him to the
rich tradition of landscape painting evident in the VMFA collection. His
sweeping views of rural areas, dominated by a powerful, active sky above,
capture the beauty of Virginia.
